Anacostia Riverkeeper

Protecting and restoring the Anacostia River.

AREA - D.C. and Maryland

AGE RANGE - All ages

What is Anacostia Riverkeeper?

Established in 2008, Anacostia Riverkeeper works to create a safe, swimmable, fishable, accessible Anacostia River for all DC area residents.

Through a combination of outreach, advocacy, and science-based research, Anacostia Riverkeeper works to protect the water and its ecosystems, as well as to foster deeper watershed appreciation through community connections and opportunities. The Anacostia community has long been neglected both environmentally and socioeconomically, with a legacy of industry and environmental racism forming much of the historical foundation surrounding the river. However, with the help of Anacostia Riverkeeper and other local grassroots organizations, progress has been made to make the river not only safer but more accessible and approachable for the people who live along its banks.

How do I volunteer?

Anacostia Riverkeeper offers a number of volunteer opportunities, including: trash cleanup, water quality monitoring, staffing events, and participating in public events.

If you enjoy the great outdoors and love improving local waterways, this may be the opportunity for you!
